SANGRUR: A day after a soldier killed four persons, including three of his kin in Hassanpur village of Sangrur district, police have charged his family for murders and also stated that his elder brother's marriage with one of the victims was reason behind the incident. Police said Gurpreet Kaur had married soldier Jagdeep Singh's elder brother Gurdeep Singh around three years ago.
Jagdeep and his family were not happy with the marriage as Gurdeep married Gurpreet out of love.
Acting on the complaint lodged by Gurpreet's brother Sukhdeep Singh, police have charged Jagdeep, who was killed on Tuesday in exchange of fire with police, his father Gobind Singh, mother Sukhwant Kaur, sister Deepinder Kaur and friend Pamma under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 498a (harassment of women by her husband or his relatives) of the IPC.
Dhuri deputy superintendent of police Nahar Singh said investigation revealed that Jagdeep's family was not happy with the love marriage of Gurdeep with Gurpreet and they would also harass her to bring dowry. "It has come to light that around a week ago, Gurpreet was sent to her parents' home by her in-laws. However, she was brought back only after some prominent persons of the village intervened in the matter," he said.
Police said Jagdeep's friend Pamma was also part of the group that had brought Gurpreet back to home and he had taken the responsibility that she would be safe with her in-laws. Jagdeep had also killed his uncle Labh Singh's wife Labh Kaur, and her 16-year-old grandson Harmandeep Singh. Police said Jagdeep targeted Labh's family as they had sold part of their land to them when his elder brother Gurdeep had migrated to United States around two years ago.
Jagdeep's family had spent around Rs 20-25 lakh to send Gurdeep to US and sold land, which, according to police, appeared to have led to dispute among both families. Police have yet not arrested any accused in the case. Meanwhile, police have handed over bodies of victims Gurpreet, Karnail and Jagdeep to their relatives.
